About the judging
The National Business Awards is a prestigious ceremony in which leaders from across the nation are celebrated for outstanding performances in the corporate world. The judges assist us in identifying world-class organisations and entrepreneurs who exemplifies excellence for their major contributions to the success of South African business.
The awards are presented in association with SA’s Top Performing Companies and Public Sector to honour South Africa’s industry leaders through the acknowledgement of innovative business processes, product development, enterprise, sustainability and overall business success. The Awards also recognise the important social and environmental contributions made by organisations through the excellence of service, commitment to their customers, ethical behaviour and environmental sustainability.

Ran Neu-Ner was born an entrepreneur.
After a number of business ventures – some hugely successful and some not – Neu-Ner started The Creative Counsel, a below-the-line activations company, with school friend Gil Oved, in 2001. Their passion, innovation and creativity paid off and today, The Creative Counsel is South Africa’s leading activations agency with an annual turnover of R500 million.
In 2015 Ran concluded the biggest business transaction in South Africa to date, when he sold The Creative Counsel to French-owned international business, Publicis Groupe, for just over R2 billion. He continues today in his role of co-CEO at The Creative Counsel Group as he continues to steer and mentor his team to live by the philosophy “Brilliance or Nothing”.
He has become a serial entrepreneur whose fundamental passion is to assist up-and-coming businesses whilst growing and developing entrepreneurs. This is evident in his involvement with an incubation project he started, the Branson Mentorship Programme – and his recent pledge of R50million to assist young entrepreneurs.

Brian Kantor, author of Get South Africa Growing (Jonathan Ball, Johannesburg and Cape Town, 2017) has had a long and distinguished academic career at the University of Cape Town, where he served as Lecturer and Professor of Economics and as Dean of the Faculty of Commerce. He is now Professor Emeritus. His career includes stints as a Visiting Professor at Carnegie-Mellon University Pittsburgh PA (1978-79) and Columbia University Graduate School of Business, New York (1994).
Brian has served on government boards and commissions; consulted within the financial arena and held directorships at various listed companies. His diverse experience has spanned South Africa, the United States, Canada and Hong Kong.
Brian’s research on monetary and financial economics has been widely and frequently published. He has received accolades and renown for various business achievements including his work as Founding Chairman of the V&A Waterfront Company (1988-2001).
Brian is currently Chief Investment Strategist and Economist at Investec Wealth and Investment in Cape Town.

This award recognises a project established by an organisation that demonstrates and highlights the role of businesses in improving the communities in which they operate. This award will recognise those demonstrating the greatest impact on quality of life, economic prosperity or regeneration through direct investment, pro bono work or employee led initiatives. This award also seeks to demonstrate the link between corporate citizenship and commercial success, from staff engagement and development to reputation and brand awareness.
Customer Focus Award
DESCRIPTION
Annual revenue generated must be above R35 million.
This award will be made to the company that demonstrates the highest level of service and loyalty to its customers. They must demonstrate that comprehensive customer service procedures and policies have been put in place and show how this has resulted in increased loyalty and a larger customer base. Customer Satisfaction Index scores should be provided.
Diversity in the Workplace Award
DESCRIPTION
Annual revenue generated must be above R35 million.
This company must be able to demonstrate their commitment to diversity and transformation in the workplace. Dimensions of diversity include but are not limited to: age, ethnicity, gender, physical abilities / qualities, race, sexual orientation, educational background, geographic location, income, marital status, military experience, parental status, religious beliefs, work experience and job classification. These companies should be able to show preferential recruitment policies, skills development programmes and the progress they’ve made in transforming their workplace.

This Award will go to the company that has shown a strong adhesion to Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance policies. Evidence of achievements of set targets in these areas must be demonstrated. The winning entrant must also show active involvement in promoting ESG policies and, by doing so, setting an example for other corporations in South Africa to follow.

Annual revenue generated must be R5 – R35 million.
This category is open to SMME’s with a turnover of R5 – R35 million and a turnover growth of 10% – 2 0% in their last financial year. The winner must demonstrate significant growth in their market sector through best business practices and innovation, underpinned by a strong financial performance.
Investing in People Awards

Annual revenue generated must be above R35 million.
In recognition of the company that has demonstrated significant results of per capita expenditure through training, education, wellness and health. Areas such as productivity; the ratio of skills procurement vs. turnover; staff turnover; company policies and procedures will be taken into account.

An improvement in financial performance over a three-year period – growth in annual revenue and net profit after tax year on year will hold a high weighting when reviewing company entries for judging.
